Indonesia (Bali)
Kemenhub — Permenhub PM 63/2021 (+ local Bali rule)
At the national level Indonesia has a relatively permissive regime for tourists (no licence or registration for recreational flights under 2kg). Bali, however, has required mandatory pre-registration of any drone since January 2025 (DGCA Directive 008/2025), including under 250g, before arrival.
Some secondary sources cite 150 m instead: the exact value should be verified before flying.
Not required nationally for recreational flights <2kg; since January 2025 (DGCA Directive 008/2025) Bali requires mandatory pre-registration of ANY drone, including under 250g, via the SIPP-TA/SIPUDI system before arrival — the previous 72-hour tourist exemption has lapsed. Since February 2025, written consent from the local village council (banjar) is also required for flights within 5km of sacred sites such as Pura Besakih or Tanah Lot, even under 250g.
Not required for recreational use below the national weight thresholds.
Zones to avoid
No-fly zones usually follow the same recurring categories (airports, military sites, protected areas, historic centers). For this country: Forbidden within ~15km of airports and 500 m of military installations; Borobudur and Prambanan forbidden without special authorization, which is very hard to obtain.
What isn't 100% confirmed yet
DGCA Directive 008/2025 and the SIPP-TA/SIPUDI system are corroborated by multiple independent sources (travel/legal blogs) but not yet confirmed on a direct government portal (dephub.go.id): verify the directive number before flying.

Why registration exists
Here the threshold usually depends on the drone's weight or whether it has a camera: below a certain weight, often 250 g, many systems don't require registration for recreational use. Check the note above and the official source to see whether your specific drone falls under the requirement. For Indonesia (Bali), the official reference remains Kementerian Perhubungan (Kemenhub — Ministry of Transportation) / in Bali: Dinas Perhubungan.
How this usually works
Even where an exam isn't formally required, most aviation authorities still recommend a basic safety course: rules change often, and flying without the basics is a real risk even without a legal obligation. The exam and certificate are handled by Kementerian Perhubungan (Kemenhub — Ministry of Transportation) / in Bali: Dinas Perhubungan. Not required for recreational use below the national weight thresholds.
